City continues West Nile Virus prevention

The City of Wylie continues to take proactive measures to prevent the possibility of the West Nile Virus. The Public Works Department is dispensing mosquito pellets, formally known as Altosid Briquets, which kill the mosquito larvae and prevent them from hatching. Pellets are dispensed during periods of prolonged rain when standing water becomes particularly prevalent. The West Nile Virus is spread from the bite of a mosquito that has been infected by biting a bird carrying the virus. West Nile is not spread by person-to-person contact or directly from birds to people, according to the Texas Department of Health. However, infected mosquitoes can transmit the virus to humans and to other animals. Currently there is no vaccine for the West Nile virus. Citizens can assist controlling mosquito breeding sites by: Getting rid of all standing water. Emptying or removing any container that holds standing water (bottles, tires, buckets, etc.. Changing water in pet dishes, wading pools and birdbaths several times a week. Covering trash cans so they will not collect water Repairing leaking plumbing, hoses and outside faucets. To prevent mosquito bites, citizens are encouraged to: Keep doors, porches and window screens in good condition. Wear long sleeves and pants when outside. Use repellants with DEET is recommended, but directions must be followed carefully.
